“There’s no way that we can continue this spending spree. In fact, I think in many ways the most interesting candidate – I’d even vote for him if he was running against Obama – is Ron Paul.”
–Oliver Stone, filmmaker of Platoon, JFK and Wall Street

“Some of the ideas Ron Paul is championing now – some of them – are ideas that I championed in the 1990s. For instance, the idea that the United States has to give up the empire, to cut back and pull our horns in a bit, that we cannot be the policemen of the world, that we cannot give orders to the world.”
–Pat Buchanan, Senior Advisor to Presidents Nixon and Reagan

Most people miss the uniqueness of what Ron Paul is achieving.

Congressman Ron Paul

He draws support from both the right and the left but unlike most other coalitions he doesn’t draw from the most wishy-washy and moderate elements from each side.

In fact it’s the most ideologically pro-free-market or even nationalistic conservative — and most ideologically anti-Wall-Street/anti-War leftists — who support Ron Paul, as well as his now being one of the most popular candidates among independents and young voters.

Of course he builds on an original base of pro-constitutionalist advocates as well as Pro-Bill-of-Rights libertarians and civil libertarians. He draws support from rich one-percenters who want lower taxes and struggling 99-percenters who want the government to stop bailing out Wall Street. He has support both from factions within the Tea Party and factions within Occupy Wall Street.

There has never been anything like it in American politics before.

The Ron Paul base is, in fact, revolutionary, and that’s demographically provable — not just hype. When you put all his different bases of support together in a fall match-up with Obama, Ron Paul polls even with Obama within the margin of error.

The Libertarian Party tried for close to four decades to put together this broad-based coalition, including in 1988 when they nominated Ron Paul as their presidential candidate, but failed utterly, appealing only to the small percentage of self-identifying libertarians supplemented by a few single-issue voters disenchanted by the major parties.

Yet, the dumbass Republicans in the thrall of the establishmentarian centrists who want continued corporate bail-outs, crony capitalism, and endless U.S. dictating other countries’ domestic and foreign policies have submarined the one candidate who could actually win back their party the White House, by the simple propaganda technique of convincing 90% of Republicans that Ron Paul is unelectable.

Republicans who claim they believe in God have actually rejected a political miracle.

It’s a propaganda victory worthy of Joseph Goebbels and, ironically, the losers will end up being the very establishmentarians who will witness their system collapse around their heads due to their inability to restrain their unlimited appetites for micro-managing the lives, and stealing the individual property, of seven billion humans living on this planet.

Evil is by its nature destructive and those who practice it ultimately destroy themselves and everything they touch.

With no Ron Paul to save the system only those going off-the-radar and networking alternative off-grid countereconomies will thrive and rebuild the future.

Even knowing it — and believing they can themselves go underground to save themselves — the establishmentarians compulsively continue the destruction.

This makes the establishment the actual revolutionaries promoting Agorism. The self-identifying Agorists are merely surfers on the political-economic tsunami the establishment is generating.

How ironically insane is that?

Political analyst Frank Luntz tells us that what’s most important to Republican primary voters this electoral season is selecting a candidate who can beat President Obama in the fall general election.

This is the only reason former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is getting any traction at all with conservative, Christian evangelical, and Tea Party factions within the Republican Party.

Romney’s political record is moderate to liberal, with his having at one time or another supported state-funded abortions, gun control, and government-run health-care. It’s only the polls showing that within the margin of error Mitt Romney is even with Barack Obama in a fall match-up that Mitt Romney is a Republican front-runner.

But there is another Republican candidate who — according to a recent CBS poll of registered voters — polls within the margin of error dead even with Barack Obama for the fall general election: Congressman Ron Paul.

All the other Republican candidates — Newt Gingrich, Rich Santorum, John Huntsman, and Rick Perry — all poll points behind President Obama well outside the margin of error.

On the question of which Republican presidential candidate would stand the best chance of denying President Obama a second term, only two candidates poll well: Romney and Paul.

Romney’s political record is close to being indistinguishable from Obama’s.

Paul’s unchanging beliefs and Congressional voting record, as an advocate for a federal government returned to strictly-observed Constitutional limitations, makes him the first Republican candidate since Barry Goldwater who could truly be called Mr. Conservative.

The important difference is that — in the United States with a national debt greater than its gross domestic product, over-extended in both domestic entitlements and overseas military operations, and with the Bill of Rights in a coma — conservative Republicans, independent voters, and left-wing opponents of the military-industrial complex have come together in a unique coalition that might actually vote Ron Paul into the White House.

<img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9d/Ron_Paul%2C_official_Congressional_photo_portrait%2C_2007.jpg/478px-Ron_Paul%2C_official_Congressional_photo_portrait%2C_2007.jpg" alt="Ron Paul"height=250 />
Megyn Kelly / Congressman Ron Paul

Yet, over and over again, Fox News Channel political commentators including Dick Morris, Bill O’Reilly, Charles Krauthammer, Megyn Kelly, and Sean Hannity tell their viewers that Ron Paul is dead last in electability in the general election against President Obama.

It’s Republican-on-Republican violence against the truth, and one can conclude that the dominant multinationalist-controlled factions in charge of the Republican Party would rather hand multinationalist President Obama a second term than allow a constitutionalist to place America’s general welfare above foreign business interests.

In a January 13th interview with Ron Paul, Megyn Kelly put up a graphic showing that Republican voters rate Dr. Paul as the candidate least likely to defeat Obama. Kelly then threw this poll in Congressman Paul’s face in an attempt to make him look like a pitiful loser.

CNN: NH Exit Poll: Most Likely to Defeat Obama: Paul 88%

Even this record of Republican voter perception is a lie, as this CNN screen capture from the night of the New Hampshire primary shows.

If Orwellian media propaganda manages to convince Republican primary voters that Ron Paul is unelectable, a fraud will have successfully denied Republicans their best chance not only at retaking the White House in 2013, but implementing traditional policies that Republican voters actually support.

I’m not, myself, sanguine that any election can forestall the impending financial collapse of the dollar-accounted United States economy. I am, after all, the author of Alongside Night, and running myself ragged trying to make the movie from it that will show the American people how they can stockpile the seeds for a harsh economic winter that can regrow the economy in a forthcoming American Spring.

But if anyone can prove my pessimism wrong, it’s Ron Paul, and I certainly think he deserves the chance to give it one last try.

Ron Paul is not the avatar of any purist libertarian. He’s the last-chance candidate of the American political class. If they throw Ron Paul under the bus, they’re either blind and stupid beyond belief, or they’ve already squirreled away their own assets somewhere and believe they can survive the inevitable wrath of the unbelievably-well-armed American people. It’s worth noting, also, that Ron Paul is first in contributions from currently serving American military personnel.

Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi made the same calculation with far fewer guns and high-tech-enabled hunters awaiting them.

Oops!

#

Fox News pundit Bill O’Reilly today declared that Republican presidential contender Congressman Ron Paul’s foreign policy regarding Iran disqualifies Dr. Paul from being president of the United States.

<img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9d/Ron_Paul%2C_official_Congressional_photo_portrait%2C_2007.jpg/478px-Ron_Paul%2C_official_Congressional_photo_portrait%2C_2007.jpg" alt="Ron Paul"height=275 />
Bill O’Reilly / Congressman Ron Paul

Would a President Ron Paul not ask Congress for a declaration of war against Iran should Iran attack the United States?

Of course President Ron Paul would do that.

So just what is it that Bill O’Reilly wants a president of the United States to do that President Ron Paul wouldn’t do?

President Ron Paul would not preemptively deploy the military forces of the United States of America – without a declaration of war by Congress, as required by the U.S. Constitution — to prevent Iran from developing an atomic fission bomb of a power that the United States first developed in 1945.

Currently Iran does not have a single atomic bomb in its arsenal. There is debatable intelligence that Iran is working to build such a bomb. If Iran were to succeed in building an atomic bomb this would be a weapon system far less powerful than any of the thousands and thousands of thermonuclear fusion bombs that the United States has attached to intercontinental ballistic missiles that could reduce Iran to radioactive rubble in under an hour.

Bill O’Reilly wants a president of the United States to prevent Iran from building its first atomic bomb because Bill O’Reilly fears that Iran would use such a bomb against Israel, which has in its arsenal several hundred atomic bombs that could reduce Iran to radioactive rubble in under an hour.

Ron Paul has said in the Republican presidential debates that because it has many of its own atomic bombs Israel can defend itself from any Iranian threat and not only does not need the United States to attack Iran but Ron Paul also has noted that the United States does not even have a treaty with Israel that requires it to come to the defense of Israel.

So why is Bill O’Reilly so hot on a president of the United States turning the Constitution of the United States into a kind of radioactive rubble by preemptively attacking Iran to prevent it from developing an atomic bomb that either the United States or Israel could respond to with the total obliteration of Iran should it attack either country?

“I don’t think we need another Neville Chamberlain with Iran,” writes Bill O’Reilly. “So, he wants to be friends with Iran, that’s swell.”

Neville Chamberlain

O’Reilly refers to the history prior to World War II, when British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain did not declare war on Nazi Germany when Hitler used military force to annex to Germany ethnically-German territory possessed by Czechoslovakia.

According to the BBC:

Like many in Britain who had lived through World War One, Chamberlain was determined to avert another war. His policy of appeasement towards Adolf Hitler culminated in the Munich Agreement in which Britain and France accepted that the Czech region of the Sudetenland should be ceded to Germany.

Chamberlain left Munich believing that by appeasing Hitler he had assured ‘peace for our time’. However, in March 1939 Hitler annexed the rest of the Czech lands of Bohemia and Moravia, with Slovakia becoming a puppet state of Germany. Five months later in September 1939 Hitler’s forces invaded Poland. Chamberlain responded with a British declaration of war on Germany.

In fact, Neville Chamberlain’s policy for the British Empire with respect to Germany was far closer to the policy Bill O’Reilly advocates with respect to Iran than the policy advocated by Ron Paul for the United States.

When Neville Chamberlain as Great Britain’s Prime Minister declared war on Germany in 1939 it was not because Germany had attacked Great Britain or any territory claimed by the British but because Britain had a defense treaty with Poland. Furthermore, Chamberlain’s declaration of war on Germany in 1939 was made at a time that Britain was militarily unprepared for a Second World War with Germany. Had the United States not entered the war on the side of Great Britain Hitler’s Germany almost certainly would have won.

Neither did Neville Chamberlain have any reason to be able to count on the United States entering the war. American popular sentiment was overwhelmingly opposed to entering another European war and it’s only by a quirk of history that the United States did join Great Britain as an ally against Hitler.

Had Hitler in December 1941 ignored his treaty with Japan the same way he ignored his 1939 Munich treaty with Great Britain — and not declared war on the United States in response to the U.S. declaration of war on Germany’s ally Japan — the United States would have been engaged in a Pacific theater war against Japan and unable to join Britain in a war against Germany. All U.S. warships in the Atlantic would have had to be immediately redeployed to the Pacific as of the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. Rather than insulting Chamberlain for “appeasing” Hitler by not declaring war in 1938, history would have recorded that it was Chamberlain’s rash 1939 declaration of war against Germany in defense of Poland that led to the end of an English-controlled Great Britain.

Developing its own atomic bomb is not the only way Iran might become a nuclear power. Consider this scenario: following a preemptive U.S. strike on Iran, destroying Iran’s nuclear facilities with attendant loss of life, a nuclear-armed Pakistan might well be sympathetic enough to sell Iran an atomic bomb. In another scenario, someone in the post Kim Jong Il North Korea vying to consolidate power, and needing cash to do it, might decide the cash Iran is willing to pay for an atomic bomb is well worth the risk of making the sale to Iran — and with little consequence since if that bomb were used against the United States an overextended United States expanding war in the Middle East would be unlikely to spark a second-front war against North Korea.

And then what? Would a sneak attack by the United States on Iran result in the Fox News studios in midtown Manhattan be ground zero for a nuclear explosion with millions of casualties making the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 look like a picnic by comparison? Or would the United States luck out by merely having tens of thousands of deaths from an atomic–bomb attack on Disneyland in Anaheim, California or Disney World in Orlando, Florida?

That’s the thing about sneak attacks, especially when they leave the country being attacked intact enough to launch a counter-attack.

The Japanese found that one out the hard way.

Ron Paul’s caution reflects the caution of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Calling Ron Paul unacceptable as a President for promising to maintain a traditional – and Constitutionally-demanded – foreign policy is un-American, dangerous, and using Bill O’Reilly’s favorite phrase, the words of a Pinhead.

I’ve been busy getting my first movie out and prepping my second movie. Aside from blatantly promotional activities on these pages, I haven’t written any commentary on current events for a while. So taking a breath, here’s me playing catch-up on the last few months.

The Occupus vs. the Occuparty

The first indication I had that the Occupy movement had wings was sitting in a casino restaurant in Pahrump, Nevada, and hearing a man from one table ask a man at another table, “Are you part of the one percent or the ninety-nine percent?”

That idea — that we have two distinct classes, with a rich top and a poor bottom — isn’t anything new. It’s business as usual for the human race, which historically has divided between Aristocracy and Commoners, Patricians and Plebeians, Management and Workers, Patrones and peones, and Haves and Have Nots.

America — not as an actual place but as a Platonic ideal — is a rebellion against prior human history. The classical American story — the American Dream — is about a nobody who starts at the bottom and ends up a Somebody at the top. Upward mobility, it’s called, and the history of America — in its abolition of slavery and Jim Crow, in its embracing one immigrant ethnicity after another, in all attempts to allow innovators, the thrifty, and hard workers to raise themselves up along with their families — is the Human Revolutionary Virus, as true in Mumbai or Sofia as it was in New York City.

As a well-financed campaign organized to attain political ends, the Occupus is simply the latest attempt to ignite a class warfare that ultimately works to the benefit of the tops. Chaos in the streets of course demands a police presence, and we’ve seen that.

As a grassroots movement from people — especially the young — who know their future is being bought and sold, the Occuparty is simply more-media-correct language for the same impulse that generated the Tea Party.

When Occupy and Tea Party realize they’re the same movement with different rhetoric — and stop pissing each other off — the Occupus had better hide in inky waters.

#

The Mark of Cain

You’re not going to convince me that the former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City — who doesn’t speak of gutting government but of hefty new taxes hard for poor people to evade — is anybody true conservatives, much less libertarians, should consider as their avatar.

But it’s certainly interesting to watch the same sort of people who during Bill Clinton’s impeachment endlessly repeated the mantra “It’s only sex!” now work to mark Herman Cain as a sexual harasser, with the latest Gloria Allred dog-and-pony show being a client who, if Herman Cain did to her what she claims he did over a decade ago, should have brought charges of sexual assault against Cain when the supposed molestation happened.

It will be enough for me if Herman Cain is stopped from further molesting the American taxpayer. But otherwise, political bimbo eruptions are so nineties, and we’re all so over it.

#

I Ran from Iran When the A-Bombing Began

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is not someone whose word you can take to the bank, but he recently said something which is so logical on the face of it you have to wonder if he was accidentally telling the truth: “We will not build two (nuclear) bombs in the face of (America’s) 20,000.”

Ahmadinejad is probably lying in that Iran is probably building the two atomic bombs, along with testing missiles that could carry these atomic bombs to targets in Israel.

But Ahmadinejad is also admitting a greater truth. If Iran nuked Tel Aviv with the sort of atomic bomb that the United States first used in 1945 against the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, U.S. Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles carrying thermonuclear warheads could respond within minutes and eliminate Persia from the face of the earth.

I’m willing to believe that individual Muslims can be nutter enough to strap themselves with suicide vests and blow up a cafe or a bus, but I don’t think any ruling class’s faith in Paradise is confident enough to launch an attack which stands a good chance of annihilating the attacking nation.

Is there anyone who really wants to argue that Iran with the possibility of getting its first A-bombs is more of a threat than a Soviet Union that for decades had thousands of thermonuclear bombs and pretty much a certainty of successfully deploying them against American and European cities?

Please. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has shown that he’s smart enough to understand the words “Assured Destruction” — and he also damned well knows if he orders the atomic bombing of Israel, what he can do to threaten the United States from killing his country in retaliation won’t be Mutual.

Ahmadinejad is engaging in typical primate behavior, jumping up and down and trying to look scary. But he has no poker face and he’s just shown us his tell. When Saddam Hussein tried this sort of bluff he ended up swinging on a rope. Hey, Mahmoud. Muammar Gaddafi had full diplomatic relations with the U.S. and that didn’t prevent him from being dragged out of a hole in the ground and shot. You really don’t want to make the whale raise you and call.

Strategic business alliance between nutritional supplement company Life Enhancement Products and indie film company Jesulu Productions demonstrates a new distribution model for indie films, where a sponsor’s sales revenues are shared with a producer, repaying movie investors. First up: Lady Magdalene’s, a triple-film-festival-award-winning suspense comedy starring original Star Trek’s Lt. Uhura, Nichelle Nichols, released for free views both on web and TV, with Life Enhancement infomercial.

(OpenPress) November 8, 2011 — Most entertainment industry observers are confident that new-media distribution of movies to digital devices will become a major part of film distribution, but until now nobody has demonstrated a business model that creates a revenue stream sufficient to repay film investors. Now one indie film company is trying to create just such a digital-media revenue stream, making independent film-making once again attractive to investors by creating new profitable competition to traditional distribution channels monopolized by the interlocking cartels of movie studios, broadcast/cable/satellite systems & networks, and chain theatrical exhibitors.

Jesulu Productions has just released for free viewing on both YouTube and broadcast television its triple-film-festival-award-winning suspense comedy, Lady Magdalene’s, starring the original Star Trek‘s Lt. Uhura, Nichelle Nichols, including an up-front infomercial by the nutritional supplement company, Life Enhancement Products. The strategic business alliance between the independent film company and nutritional supplement company pioneers a new distribution model for independent films, whereby the new revenue stream created by the movie’s sponsored distribution is shared with a film’s producer, repaying movie investors for the costs of production.

This business model for infomercial-sponsored independent film distribution was conceived by Lady Magdalene’s writer/producer/director, J. Neil Schulman, also an award-winning novelist and journalist, who in the 1980′s and 1990′s founded and operated two eBook publishing companies, SoftServ Publishing and Pulpless.Com, which were the first companies to make books by bestselling authors available for download to personal computers, first as SoftServ in 1990 via the General Electric Network for Information Exchance (GEnie), then beginning in 1995 from the world wide web as Pulpless.Com.

“I believe movie watchers are already used to seeing commercial messages before a movie starts,” says Schulman, “on TV and even in movie theaters. I also think a well-done and entertaining infomercial is much more likely to produce results than traditional web banner advertising extraneous to the movie, which web surfers are much more used to ignoring.”

In Jesulu Productions’ suspense comedy, Lady Magdalene’s, Nichelle Nichols plays Maggie, the colorful and determined madam of a legal Nevada brothel — relocated from New Orleans after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita — and in tax default to the IRS. However the talented but disgraced federal agent, Jack Goldwater (Ethan Keogh), sent as the federal receiver to manage the brothel, soon uncovers evidence that Lady Magdalene’s is being used by al-Qaeda operatives as a meetup for a plot leading to the tunnels under Hoover Dam. But Agent Goldwater and a female federal agent he soon meets up with (Susan Smythe) can’t figure out what al-Qaeda is really doing until they seek help from Lady Magdalene and the working women at the brothel.

Everybody knows that new-media distribution of movies to digital devices will become a major part of film distribution, but to this point nobody has demonstrated a business model that creates a revenue stream sufficient to repay film investors competitive to traditional distribution models that have already shut out all but a handful of independent films. If the cutting-edge Lady Magdalene’s/Life Enhancement business model of free distribution with infomercials works to create such a revenue stream, suddenly independent filmmaking becomes attractive to investors again and for the first time enables competition to traditional distribution channels monopolized by the interlocking cartels of movie studios, broadcast/cable/satellite systems & networks, and chain theatrical exhibitors.

(OpenPress) November 6, 2011 — The triple-film-festival-award-winning suspense comedy, Lady Magdalene’s, starring the original Star Trek‘s Lt. Uhura, Nichelle Nichols, has just been released for free viewing on both YouTube and broadcast television, including an up-front infomercial by the nutritional supplement company, Life Enhancement Products. The strategic business alliance between Life Enhancement Products and the independent film company, Jesulu Productions, demonstrates a new distribution model for independent films, whereby the new revenue stream created by the movie’s sponsored distribution is shared with a film’s producer, repaying movie investors for the costs of production.

This business model for sponsored independent film distribution was conceived by Lady Magdalene’s writer/producer/director, J.

In this suspense comedy, Lady Magdalene’s, Nichelle Nichols plays Lady Magdalene, the colorful and determined madam of a legal Nevada brothel — relocated from New Orleans after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita — and in tax default to the IRS.

Neil Schulman’s “1979 Novel Ripped from Today’s Headlines!” — Alongside Night — will have its world premiere at the JC Cinema on the Fairfax, Virginia campus of George Mason University during the Spring Semester of 2012.

The premiere, currently scheduled for Wednesday, April 11, 2012 7:30 PM, is being sponsored by the campus organization Mason Liberty, an affiliate of Students for Liberty, but the campus group is seeking to add co-sponsors.

The announcement was made on Facebook.

The movie, which Schulman adapted from his novel and is directing as his second feature film, is currently in pre-production with an intended start date for principal photography in December 2011. It stars Kevin Sorbo in the role of Nobel laureate economist Dr. Martin Vreeland, whose theories are the lynchpin of a political crisis when the United States dollar becomes worthless on world markets.

Asked about a premiere only five months away for a production that hasn’t yet started principal photography, director Schulman replied, “I’ve been storyboarding this movie in my head since I wrote my first draft of the script in 1978. I already know every shot I want in the movie by heart. I expect to wrap principal photography in early February and already be editing the movie while shooting it, so I have no worries that we’ll have a good early cut of the movie to show in April. But like with my first feature I expect we’ll do additional cutting afterwards, and have a more polished cut ready for film-festival play and commercial release by Summer 2012.”

The 30th anniversary PDF edition of the Alongside Night novel recently passed three-hundred-thousand downloads from http://www.alongsidenight.net.

The novel portrays the near-future collapse of the American economy due to government overspending and the federal government monetizing its debt — resulting in a hyperinflationary collapse of the dollar — as seen through the eyes of Elliot Vreeland, the teenage son of Nobel-prizewinning economist Dr. Martin Vreeland, key player in a last-ditch attempt to prevent the United States government from collapsing because its money can no longer pay government officials or the military.

Alongside Night was originally published hardcover October 16, 1979 by Crown Publishers, with dust-jacket endorsements from Nobel laureate economist Milton Friedman and A Clockwork Orange author Anthony Burgess.

The novel went on to win rave reviews in publications across the political spectrum from the Los Angeles Times Book Review and Sunday Detroit News to Reason Magazine and Liberty.

It’s often been compared to Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged. One reviewer wrote, “If Ayn Rand’s ‘Atlas Shrugged’ was the elementary school of a very effective education in freedom, then J. Neil Schulman’s ‘Alongside Night’ has to be the post-graduate studies course.”

In 1989 Alongside Night won a Prometheus Hall of Fame Award from the Libertarian Futurist Society. The novel was voted the Freedom Book Club’s Book of the Month for May 2009. Also in 2009 the Karl Hess Club cited Alongside Night as one of the reasons it was awarding author J. Neil Schulman its Samuel Edward Konkin III Memorial Chauntecleer Award.

Alongside Night has won cult status among libertarians, gold-bugs, advocates of laissez-faire capitalism, Tea Party proponents — because of endorsements for the novel from Tea Party icons Congressman Ron Paul and Glenn Beck — and on October 10th a copy of the novel was spotted by Reason Magazine reporter, Tim Cavanaugh, at the northern encampment at Occupy LA * LAPD. The novel — endorsed by Samuel Edward Konkin III, author of the New Libertarian Manifesto — is considered one of the founding documents of the international Agorist movement, being the first published presentation of CounterEconomics as an alternative to politics as a means of achieving libertarian social goals.

On June 13, 2009, the novel’s current publisher, Pulpless.Com, made a 30th anniversary PDF edition of Alongside Night available for free download from its website at http://www.alongsidenight.net. The novel quickly became a popular download but went viral when in five days in May 2010 over 100,000 copies of the novel were downloaded.

The 30th Anniversary PDF edition of Alongside Night passed 300,000 downloads on September 19, 2011. There have been over another 4,000 downloads since then.

Its text is the same as the 20th Anniversary edition of Alongside Night published by Pulpless.Com in 1999 and still in print as a trade paperback. An Amazon.Com Kindle edition with the same text was also published in 2009, and it was this edition that was read by Glenn Beck.

Dr. Milton Friedman wrote of Alongside Night: “A cautionary tale with a disturbing resemblance to past history and future possibilities.”

Anthony Burgess wrote, “I received Alongside Night at noon today. It is now eight in the evening and I just finished it. I think I am entitled to some dinner now as I had no lunch. The unputdownability of the book ensured that. It is a remarkable and original story, and the picture it presents of an inflation- crippled America on the verge of revolution is all too acceptable. I wish, and so will many novelists, that I, or they, had thought of the idea first. A thrilling novel, crisply written, that fires the imagination as effectively as it stimulates the feelings.”

Congressman Ron Paul wrote, “Alongside Night may be even more relevant today than it was in 1979. Hopefully this landmark work of libertarian science fiction will inspire a new generation of readers to learn more about the ideas of liberty and become active in the freedom movement.”

On his June 2, 2009 radio broadcast Glenn Beck <a href="http://jneilschulman.rationalreview.com/2010/06/glenn-beck-on-alongside-night-phenomenal-phenomenal/" "target="_blank">said of Alongside Night, “It reads exactly like my show — written in 1979! Phenomenal! Phenomenal!”

The Los Angeles Times Book Review wrote, “High Drama … A story of high adventure, close escapes, mistaken identities, and thrilling rescues. … A fast-moving tale of a future which is uncomfortably close at hand.”

Publishers Weekly wrote, “An unabashedly polemical, libertarian novel which packages its message in a fast, effectively told action adventure.”

The Sunday Detroit News wrote, “Let me begin with a disclaimer: I don’t really agree with many of J. Neil Schulman’s ideas about society or politics or money. But his first book, Alongside Night, is as enjoyable piece of cautionary fiction as I have read in some years … Like Ayn Rand and Robert A. Heinlein, Schulman can tell a good story!”

Reason Magazine has called Alongside Night, “One of the most widely hailed libertarian novels since the classic works of Ayn Rand.”

Science Fiction Review called it, “Probably the best libertarian novel since Atlas Shrugged.”

Liberty Magazine wrote, “As the seventies ended … the time seemed ripe for a great libertarian novel to appear, and so it did. The novel was Alongside Night…”

Alongside Night’s author, J. Neil Schulman, is also known for his Prometheus-Award-winning novel, The Rainbow Cadenza (Simon & Schuster, 1983), known as the screenwriter of the 1986 CBS Twilight Zone episode “Profile in Silver” in which a time-traveling future historian creates an alternate time-line by stopping the JFK assassination, is author of the Charlton Heston-endorsed nonfiction book Stopping Power: Why 70 Million Americans Own Guns, and is the author of the longest interview ever conducted with science-fiction Grandmaster Robert A. Heinlein, published in Schulman’s The Robert Heinlein Interview and Other Heinleiniana.

In 2006 J. Neil Schulman wrote, produced, and directed the suspense-comedy feature film, Lady Magdalene’s, starring the original Star Trek’s Lt. Uhura, Nichelle Nichols, and the film won “Best Cutting Edge Film” at the 2008 San Diego Black Film Festival, “Audience Choice” at the 2008 Cinema City International Film Festival, and a “Special Jury Prize for Libertarian Ideals” at the 2011 Anthem Film Festival, which is part of FreedomFest. The film is currently available from Amazon.com as a Special Preview DVD and Amazon Instant Video, where the movie’s musical soundtrack is available both as CD’s and as mp3 downloads. Sponsored by Life Enhancement Products, the movie will have its local Nevada. television premiere on Halloween 2011 then be released nationally for broadcast & cable-satellite, as well as a planned Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack to be released in 2012. The complete Life-Enhancement-sponsored Lady Magdalene’s will also stream on the web for free from its official movie website at http://www.ladymagdalenes.com beginning in October 2011.

J. Neil Schulman has written a screen adaptation of Alongside Night and is in pre-production to direct it as his second feature film, starring international film and TV star Kevin Sorbo in the role of Dr. Martin Vreeland. Both Schulman and Sorbo are executive producers on the production, and its official movie website at http://www.alongsidenightmovie.com.
Kevin Sorbo was the star of the #1 rated worldwide TV series, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and is featured in the 2011 movie Soul Surfer.

New York Times bestselling author Tom Woods has written of the Alongside Night book-to-movie project:

The libertarian world has been doing a good job writing and publishing in economics, history, and philosophy. But to reach a wider audience, we need to go where the people are. For one thing, people read much more fiction than nonfiction. J. Neil Schulman’s Alongside Night is an excellent example of the possibilities for libertarian fiction. And now there’s a move to get his book adapted into a motion picture. Fiction writing and the movies are two areas where we are getting killed. We’re not even putting up a fight. A project like this can change that.

Alongside Night, with major endorsements from Ron Paul and Milton Friedman, its libertarian awards and rave reviews, and the intention of Free to Choose media to use the film in its teaching modules distributed to high schools, is an extremely rare opportunity to make inroads into the mass entertainment media. It would be great to see people of means get behind this important project.
