I am excited to see this classic with today's young hottest actors. I hope that the modern version would still adhere to the original composition with the touch of modern days so the viewers could relate into it.

Ever since I was "forced" to read The Catcher In The Rye, at the tender age of 14 (wow so long ago now), I can honestly say that Salinger's writing touched me on a deep level.

The way he crafted that book it really was a thing of beauty on so many levels. I was deeply moved back then as a young boy and even recently I picked up Cather In The Rye once more and again I was moved.

There are not too many books that I can read again (even years later) and have the book blow my mind all over again!

What a wonderful post honoring this wonderful man, thank you!

I'm a fan of three of the writers in your quartet, but I'm embarrassed to say I've never heard of the fourth member (Robert A. Heinlein).

Thank you for the introduction -- I'm off to do some research.

Taylor Lautner? Yeesh!

I imagine many actors in Hollywood will be fighting over Holden. Most aggressive will be those that named their first child after the character, though they are likely too old for the role.

I've only read Catcher, and I only ever knew that Salinger was a recluse. That was a great read -- thanks for all the insight!

Steve Reed:

“I’m pretty sure that whatever restrictions Salinger’s will or trust (if he did not die intestate) imposes on his heirs, executor, or trustees — regarding the sale of his literary rights to the movies — would not withstand a court challenge.”

Another one of your unsupported obiter dicta, unfortunately. Can you supply any reasoning for your being thus “sure”? If such restictions can’t be made and enforced, the making of wills and trusts becomes pointless.

Wills appoint an executor. Trusts appoint trustees. The dead relinquish control to the living, and the living do as they please.

Another one of your unsupported obiter dicta, unfortunately. Can you supply any reasoning for your being thus "sure"? If such restictions can't be made and enforced, the making of wills and trusts becomes pointless.

They also usually aren't allowed to persist forever, true enough. But any overturning of such instruments typically comes from "public policy" issues (read: predatory politicians) or protesting second- and third-generation heirs (read: they just want the money).

Neither situation has yet transpired, and neither is going to do so very soon. Your having Salinger as a literary inspiration doesn't give you (or anyone else in or out of Hollywood) any legal standing to challenge whatever choices he made.
