Kurt,

I can blame indeed blame Clinton. While I have multiple reports of gun restrictions on U.S. military bases prior to Clinton, it wasn't a Department of Defense policy preventing base commanders from reacting to threats until Clinton. After 9/11, it would have been logical to expect base commanding officers to revisit the merits of revising their policies if the Clinton-era policy didn't take the decision away from them and restrict it to the politically-appointed Secretary of the Army.

Bush is equally responsible for not repealing the policy after he saw the Pentagon in flames on 9/11.

I agree with your ideas, but in reality you can't blame Clinton.
Back in the 80's when I was in the Navy, the base was disarmed. About the only time I as a SeaBee carried both a weapon and ammunition was when I was walking watch on our armory- and then the shotgun was uloaded.

I echoed many of these se thoughts in a letter to the editor of Stars and Stripes. I'll be very surprised if it is ever published. My thoughts after this were similar to post VA Tech: why were these people forced in to victimhood? So far, my Army buddies look at me like I'm crazy and you're the only professional communicator in any medium I know of that is asking these questions. Why is this so hard to grasp? Mass killings happen when crazy people have access to the forceably disarmed, and make no mistake; we are forceably disarmed. In my own informal, unscientific poll taken over the years, I am astonished by the numbers of military members who do not own private firearms, and who, in violation of their oath, are in favor of victim disarmament laws.
Thanks for being a voice of reason Neil.
